The Naturisimo team have been swooning over Briogeo‘s clean, potent haircare since it first arrived in the office, so naturally we wanted to meet founder Nancy Twine to learn more about the brand, the ingredients she uses and what inspired her to create her brand.
What is the story behind Briogeo? What inspired you to create the brand?
I have a family history of formulating natural personal care products in the kitchen which was inspired by my grandmother’s craftiness for using what she had to provide for the family – even if it meant taking oils and extracts and turning them into soaps. Mid-way through my finance career I began seeing the shift that was happening in natural beauty – more people were seeking out natural, toxin-free alternatives to their beauty regimen and I was curious to dip back into natural product production in a bigger way!
How did you come up with the name BRIOGEO?
The word “brio” is Italian for “colourful, vibrant, full of life” which expresses our brand’s personality and “geo” is Latin for “of Earth, or nature”, which speaks to our ingredients inside of the bottle.
You operate with a ‘6 free hair care’ rule. Can you tell us what 6 ingredients you have excluded from the range & why?
6 Free is our ingredient methodology that describes our commitment to avoiding the following 6 controversial, and potentially harmful, ingredients in all of our products: sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, DEA, and synthetic dyes. Sulfates are harsh synthetic salts that strip the skin and hair of too much oil. Ultimately, they will get rid of dirt, but also can lead to skin irritation. Phthalates and parabens have both been linked to birth defects, developmental issues, hormonal imbalances and breast cancer. Silicones create an artificial smoothing effect when applied to hair and skin. They create a layer that sits atop your hair/skin that attracts dirt and blocks all the good-for-you ingredients from passing through. DEA is the foaming agent in your products, however, it is also often linked to liver and kidney cancer. Synthetic dyes can potentially cause skin and eye irritation, hyperpigmentation as well as lead to reproductive organ dysfunction.
On the topic of ingredients, what are the key natural ingredients that appear throughout your range?
We have so many good for you ingredients it’s hard to just speak about a few! The NOVA Complex is a specially formulated blend of Natural Oils, Vitamins, and Antioxidants that is found in all of our products. We use these ingredients instead of harmful chemicals like silicone, sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, which are proven to be damaging to your health. With the NOVA Complex, Briogeo products not only immediately help boost hair’s appearance, but also build the foundation for long-term beautifully nourished hair! Take a look at some of the NOVA ingredients we use in our products, and how they perform for both skin and hair:
Argan oil has the ability to provide extreme moisture to the skin and hair without drowning either in a greasy appearance. It’s high in vitamin E, which helps repair damaged and dry skin, plus contains fatty acids that give hair a natural boost. It’s also packed with antiageing properties – a huge YES for your entire body- including your hair!
Coconut oil is arguably the most versatile ingredient we use in beauty. For skin, it’s gentle enough to use as an all-over moisturizer and makeup remover, but powerful enough to deeply hydrate and cleanse. At Briogeo, we use it in our Rosarco Collection because of its ability to penetrate the hair shaft and lock in moisture, and also as a natural heat protectant.
Algae extract has major beauty benefits! It’s known to stabilize minerals in your skin to help with hydration and prevents acne from starting. We use it in our products because it provides minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins to strengthen hair and protect it from future damage.
Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that is known to keep your skin and appearance looking youthful and fresh. This vitamin creates a natural gloss for the skin that can hold in moisture and protect you from those harmful sun rays! It’s also well known as a healthy hair vitamin because it helps prevent hair loss by strengthening the follicle.
What are your top tips for maintaining healthy hair?
I believe that the first step to maintaining healthy hair is knowing your hair type. Whether you have thick, dry, fine or curly hair it is so important to know what your hair needs in its natural state. Knowing your hair type will help you in picking out the right products to fit your needs. My second piece of advice is to deep condition! When you deep condition your hair you really set the foundation for long-term hair health. You’ll notice your hair becoming softer, more manageable and less prone to breakage. I recommend our Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, which works in minutes to restore essential hydration and protect against future damage.
Is it easy for people to mix and match across the range?
Yes! Like I mentioned before – knowing your hair type is so important. Once you know what your hair needs, it simplifies your shopping experience. Maybe you are a curly girl, but also have some scalp issues – in which case you would benefit from our Scalp Revival Collection for scalp health. Or maybe you have fine hair and also need deep repair – then you would benefit from using our Blossom & Bloom Collection for volume as well as our Don’t Despair, Repair! Collection for repair.
