From the Experts: Quench Your Skin with Rooibos

We caught up with Maria Kiire-Magembe and Hellen Lawuo-Meena, the Co-Founders of Daughter of the Soil skincare to talk about the benefits of Rooibos for the skin. Daughter of the Soil are passionate about natural weapons and strategies for skincare. They use time-tested, nutrient-rich African botanical ingredients in each of their products to nourish, moisturise and protect the skin.

The abundance of high-performance natural skincare ingredients from across Africa makes it the perfect source for their range. One of the powerful ingredients that they use in their range is Rooibos.

But what is Rooibos?

Scientifically known as Aspalathus linearis, Rooibos is a member of the legume family of plants native to South Africa. The Rooibos plant is grown in a small area in the Cederberg region. It grows between 1.5 and 2 metres high, with fine needle-like leaves. The plants are cut and allowed to ferment in mounds before being spread out to dry in the sun. It is this fermentation process that gives the plant its typical red colour and hence its name. Rooibos is then sterilized by steam and dried.

The fragrant leaves of this African “red bush” are known for producing a tea that is well loved throughout the world for its pleasing taste and significant health benefits. However, tea from the red Rooibos leaves is far more than a soothing beverage. The medicinal applications of Rooibos are strongly rooted in African tradition by the Khoi and San people, owing to the tea’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, as well as its nutrient dense composition.

What is so great about it?

Since much of skin ageing is caused by environmental stressors, Rooibos’ properties help to protect the skin and maintain a more youthful look. The powerhouse antioxidants found in Rooibos include superoxide dismutase and flavonoids. These antioxidants are excellent anti-ageing substances that help in reducing wrinkles and boost the production of healthy skin cells.

Rooibos also contains alpha hydroxyl acid, a common addition to cutting edge skin care products. This acid is naturally occurring in Rooibos leaves and works to exfoliate dull skin cells. On top of all these skin care benefits, Rooibos also has high levels of many minerals and vitamins that promote healthy skin and radiance, especially zinc and vitamin D. This allows your skin’s inherent luminosity to shine through like never before. Rooibos will leave your skin looking and feeling its best.

Is it worth using on a regular basis?
